The issue is that there's no canonical file to look for. If you want a copy of a new movie, how do you know what the hash code of the movie is? If you find 10 different copies, 3 of which are quite popular, all with different hash codes, how do you know which one to download? Since pirated media is almost always converted from another format, the hash of the "right" copy will still vary, depending on the precise codec settings used. BitTorrent works fine when you know <I>exactly</I> what file you want, but it's a lot harder to pick out fakes when you just want any MP3 or AVI copy of a specific song or video.

Well, BitTorrent makes use of file hashes as well. Some sort of digital signature/PKI system would be very helpful here."This seems fairly obvious. It's the solution used by DirectConnect. Every file has a hash code and you can search by that rather than the filename, so even if someone changes the filename, you still know the file is the same, or know it's different even if the file size is the same.

“With nothing but the filename to go on, users download the fakes, causing the seed count to go up and making the fake appear even more “realistic” on the tracker.
